Reviving a dead RTX 3080: the VRAM swap that shouldn't have worked

Diagnosis

On the bench, the core rail was fine but one VRAM rail was pulling short. That points at a dead memory module, not the core.

The repair

  1. Flux the area generously - I use Amtech NC-559.
  2. Pull the suspect module with hot air at 350°C.
  3. Reball, place a known-good module, reflow.

Consumables that made it easy

Cheap flux is a false economy. Good flux is the difference between one reflow and five - and a shot of DeoxIT D100L contact cleaner on oxidized pads and connectors clears up more intermittent faults than you'd expect, often before you even reach for the iron.

How do you tell if a GPU's VRAM is bad instead of the core?
On the bench, check which rail is pulling short. A dead VRAM rail with a healthy core rail points at a memory module, not the GPU die.
Can a "dead" RTX 3080 be fixed?
Often, yes. Many no-display, no-fan cards come down to a single failed VRAM module that can be reballed and replaced.
